Opening of Serene Sanglaphu Lake
In a momentous occasion blending spirituality with tourism, the picturesque Sanglaphu Lake, also revered as the Holi Lake of Lachung, has been officially opened to tourists by Lachung Dzomsa authorities. Nestled amidst the tranquil Himalayan landscape, Sanglaphu Lake holds a special place in the hearts of locals, believed to be blessed by the esteemed Guru Rinpoche.
The Sanglaphu Lake in Sikkim has indeed been opened to the public for the first time in history. This pristine high-altitude lake, located near Yumesamdong (Zero Point) in the Mangan district, is perched at an impressive elevation of 5080 meters. It holds immense religious significance for the local people and is thought to be blessed by Guru Rinpoche.
The inaugural event included a prayer ceremony by the monks of Samten Choling Monastery in Lachung, and members of the Lachung Dzomsa—an administrative institution in North Sikkim’s Lachen and Lachung villages—were present. The head of Lachung Dzomsa, Pema Wangdi Lachungpa, highlighted the lake’s significance and urged visitors to be responsible and avoid littering to preserve the sanctity of the area.
Local residents express a sense of pride and anticipation as they witness Sanglaphu Lake transition into a tourist destination while maintaining its sacred essence. “It’s a moment of great joy for our community to share the blessings of Sanglaphu with the world,” remarks Tenzing Sherpa, a resident of Lachung.
For those planning to visit, it’s important to note that currently, only four-wheel-drive vehicles can access the lake, and visitors are reminded to refrain from bringing single-use plastic items and to avoid spitting around the lake. The Sanglaphu Lake is a result of a Glacial Lake Outburst Flood (GLOF) from the nearby Gurudongmar Lake, and it is the main source of the Teesta River.
The decision to open Sanglaphu Lake to tourists is expected to breathe new life into the tourism sector of Lachung, offering economic opportunities for local businesses and fostering cultural exchange between visitors and residents. “We believe that welcoming tourists to Sanglaphu Lake will not only showcase the natural beauty of our region but also create sustainable livelihoods for our people,” states Karma Wangchuk, a representative of Lachung Dzomsa.
As Sanglaphu Lake opens its tranquil waters to the world, it symbolizes a harmonious coexistence of nature, spirituality, and tourism, inviting travelers to embark on a journey of discovery and enlightenment in the heart of the Himalayas.
It’s a significant step towards promoting responsible tourism and cultural preservation in Sikkim. The journey to Sanglaphu Lake promises to be an adventure, offering breathtaking vistas of the Himalayas and a chance to witness one of Sikkim’s most cherished treasures. Enjoy your visit and the spiritual journey to this newly accessible natural wonder!
